“Overlapped Allocation Extent” - WTF?

| Comments

Got an “overlapped allocation extent” error on my Powerbook’s filesystem (running 10.3.3) last night. Nasty - it’d completely hang DiskWarrior. I’d never thought I’d see a problem that ol’ DiskWarrior couldn’t fix.

Luckily, though, the Mac OS has a way to fix that error without any thirdparty tools, though it’s not documented. Here’s how:

The End of TechTV?

| Comments

Leo LaPorte (formerly of the TechTV show “The ScreenSavers” is reporting that the entire staff of TechTV has been fired.

This is following Comcast/G4’s purchase of TechTV. Some of the people, it seems, are being given the option to relocate to LA, but it seems likely that many will flat out be let go.

This is SO WRONG on so many levels. TechTV in its current form is pretty damn good TV. The on-air personalities actually have personalities, and the shows themselves have been around long enough to work out all the bugs and gain a following. I’ve seen G4 and frankly, it sucks compared to TechTV - TechTV covered just about everything tech, and did a pretty good job overall.

Way to go, Commie-cast. Congrats on fucking up a perfectly good thing.

How to Break Movable Type Without Even Trying.

| Comments

Y’know, when things are going SO well, and you never have to reboot/rework/redo/rehash any of your stuff, including your blog, you get complacent.

In my case, I completely forgot that this little server has a TINY (3GB) root partition. And guess where the BerkeleyDB that backs the Movable Type system is stored? Yep, in a subdir of root.

So… what happens when the root partition fills up due to inetd logs not rotating? I’ll tell you… BerkeleyDB has a shit fit, that’s what happens. So I tried recovering the DB, and got quite a bit of it (basically, every bit of this blog). What got lost: the contents of my mblog. I still have the pix on the filesystem, but whatever text I sent is gone. Oh well. At least I was able to recover all the posts for this blog. Live and learn, I guess.

Of Free Wifi and Work…

| Comments

Gotta love free wifi. I’ve been taking advantage of it all week, and it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. I’ve got a major presentation to give at a convention next week, so I’ve been trying to get out of the office so I don’t get bugged to work on this. Coffee shops with free wifi are perfect work environments for this.

I was using www.wififreespot.com for my free wifi fix, but I ran into the owner of www.hotspotstation.com today at my latest wifi hangout, and I’m gonna start using this online database from now on. Much nicer - rather than just a flat list, he’s got reviews and things organized by work environment, provider reliability, food & beverage quality, and service quality. Not only that, but anyone can review a hotspot. Most cool. Way to go, Oliver!
